Student @ Work at the Epoch.2
This is my fav coffee shop in Austin. Started 5 years ago by several friends whose favorite late night hang out went under. In the University area the alternatives were chain outfits. So, being long on creating the type of place they would like to go too, but short on cash, the found a good size place on a side street in a dying 6 slot strip mall probably built in the 60's and certainly never remodeled. The core group and a cadre of friends stripped the place down to the studs and rebuild it with found materials and decorated with other junk from yard sales and rejects from their own homes. The style was eclectic comfy, with a lot of over stuffed furnitures, tables and chairs from wherever. Within the group there were carpenters, artists, and resourceful students. The open with only word of mouth advertising. People from the old defunct hang out came in droves and when students discovered a place where they were welcome to "nest" and the place was open 24 hours, they had a solid group of regulars. They made a small profit the first month serving as baristas for a few months until they could start hiring, mostly from the regulars. people enjoyed working there because of the relaxed management who were always ready to pitch in when things busy. The focus was on quality and friendly service; if you wanted it fast, well there was a Starbucks. Most came with packs full of gear, laptops, notebooks, books and planned to stay awhile. The quickly found that the laptop users (half the customers) were bringing extension cords and the quickly instatalled more outlets; which created even more "demand" so they did something i've never seen before: the installed outlets from the ceiling with a multi plug cord hanging over the center of every table that didn't have easy access to a wall outlet. It was safer to without wires running every which way over the floor. They added a covered deck, which is always jammed in nice weather (which is most of the time in Austin, last summer the deck didn't do so well when the temps hit 105-110daily for a couple of months). This is the way service businesses used to be built. Now you are told you need to buy all new stuff and have 2 years operating costs in hand before you even start; and even then the failure rate is >50%. Oh yea, the barista's make $20/hour with the generous tipping. there is little turn over in personnel who know the names of most of the regulars and visa versa. Now that is something "old school" anywhere in the cities any more. One more reason to stop off at the Epoch on your way to where ever. Just don't ask anyone on the main streets where it is, cause the response will be "The what?"

It’s Always Tea-Time Table ~ 1:12 Scale
“…If you knew Time as well as I do,“ said the Hatter, “you wouldn’t talk about wasting it. …”
“I don’t know what you mean, “said Alice.
“Of course you don’t!” the Hatter said…
…”I know that I have to beat time when I learn music.”
“Ah! That accounts for it, “said the Hatter. “ He won’t stand for beating.” Now, if you only kept on good terms with him, he’d do almost anything you liked with the clock…”
“Is that the way you manage? Alice asked.
The Hatter shook his head mournfully. “Not I!” he replied. “We quarreled last March….”
“….And ever since that, “the Hatter went on in a mournful tone, “he won’t do a thing I ask! It’s always six o’clock now.”
“….Is that the reason so many tea-things are put out here?” she asked.
Yes, that’s it….it’s always tea-time, and we’ve no time to wash the things between whiles.”…
